Vintage Gas & Oil Collectibles FAQ
Answers to common questions about buying, valuing, and selling vintage gas station signs, gas pump globes, gas pumps, and other petroliana.
Buying and Valuing Vintage Petroliana
How much are vintage gas station signs worth?
It depends on the brand, rarity, condition, size, and whether the sign is single- or double-sided. Common signs in average condition can sell for a few hundred dollars, while rare brands and high-grade double-sided porcelain can reach five figures at auction. The best guide to value is recent sales of the same sign in similar condition from auction houses and established dealers, not asking prices.
How can you tell if a porcelain gas station sign is original or a reproduction?
Originals are usually heavy-gauge steel with porcelain fired in separate layers, so you can often feel slight ridges where colors meet. Chips on originals typically expose dark steel or a ground coat beneath, with genuine wear where the sign was mounted or handled. Reproductions tend to be lighter, show unnaturally uniform aging, or have modern hardware and fonts or dimensions that don’t match documented examples. When in doubt, compare against known originals and buy from sellers who stand behind authenticity.
How much is a vintage gas pump globe worth?
Value depends on the globe’s construction and era, the brand and graphics, and the condition of the lenses and body. One-piece glass globes and rare brands usually bring the highest prices, while later plastic-body globes are generally more affordable. Cracked or replaced lenses and repainted bodies reduce value.
What are the different types of gas pump globes?
The main types are one-piece etched or baked glass globes (the earliest), glass lenses in metal bodies, glass lenses in glass bodies (including Gill bodies in narrow and wide versions), and later plastic-body globes such as Capco. Identifying the body type helps date a globe and is a key part of valuing it.
What is the difference between single-sided, double-sided, and flange signs?
Single-sided signs were made to mount flat on a wall or building. Double-sided signs carry graphics on both faces and were typically hung from a bracket or post so they could be read from either direction. A flange sign is a double-sided sign with a bent edge, the flange, that bolts to a wall so the sign projects out toward passing traffic.
How is the condition of a porcelain sign graded?
Collectors commonly use a 1 to 10 scale based on gloss, color, and damage. The size and location of chips matter: small edge or mounting-hole chips affect value far less than chips in the main graphics or lettering. Fading, scratches, and touch-ups also lower the grade, so always ask for clear photos of both sides.
Are vintage gas and oil collectibles a good investment?
Original, high-quality petroliana has a long collecting history, but prices vary by brand, rarity, and condition, and past results don’t guarantee future value. Buy pieces you enjoy, focus on authenticity and condition, and keep records of where each piece came from.
How do you clean and care for porcelain signs and glass globes?
Use mild soap and water with a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Avoid abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, and harsh chemicals, which can dull porcelain gloss or damage the paint on globe lenses. Display pieces indoors away from moisture, and use proper hardware when hanging heavy signs.
